Dumfries Tour
Dumfries is an ancient town with a long and turbulent past. Today it is by far the biggest town in south west Scotland. Dumfries was founded as a Royal Burgh in 1186 on the east side of the lowest crossing point of the River Nith. The land beyond the Nith, Galloway, only securely became part of Scotland during Alexander II's reign in 1234: so Dumfries was very much on the frontier during its first 50 years and it grew. Your tour will be in the borders country and will take you to the headland on the Solway coast of Dumfries and Galloway, Southerness Point which sits at the eastern end of the Mersehead Sands. A lighthouse was built here in 1748 by Dumfries Town Council for the direction of shipping coming into the River Nith. Then its onward bound following on the land of the Border Reivers where in the 15th and 16th centuries, life was marked by cattle rustling, murder and pilfering. Then onto the tiny coastal hamlet of Rockliffe which is overlooked by an Iron Age hilltop settlement known as the Mote of Mark. This is where we stop for a cup of tea or coffee and of course some traditional Scottish shortbread.
The last leg of our tour will take you up through Dalbeattie which is a town just over 200 years old situated in the sheltered valley of the River Urr. The town's best known historical figure and hero, Lieutenant William McMaster Murdoch, Royal Naval Reserve, was the First Officer of the White Star super-liner 'RMS Titanic'.
Then it's back to the Dumfries for a hearty farewell & a complimentary liqueur.
